When taking the drug with other drugs
- Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using or have recently used any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
-
- Concomitant treatment with phenytoin (medicines used to treat epilepsy and certain cardiac arrhythmias) or barbiturates (hypnotics) can reduce the effect of vitamin D3, which is due to an increased metabolism.
-
- If certain diuretics (thiazide-type diuretics) are taken at the same time, there is an increased risk of hypercalcaemia because thiazide diuretics increase tubular calcium reabsorption. With long-term use, serum calcium levels should be monitored.
-
- Simultaneous treatment with drugs that increase heart strength (cardiac glycosides) can increase their undesirable side effects (risk of cardiac arrhythmias). Patients receiving cardiac glycosides require medical monitoring (ECG, serum calcium levels).
-
- If levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement) and the drug are taken at the same time, the absorption of levothyroxine may be reduced. For this reason, there should be an interval of at least 4 hours between taking levothyroxine and the drug.
-
- The absorption of oral tetracyclines (antibiotics) can be reduced by taking the drug at the same time. There should be an interval of 3 hours between taking tetracyclines and the drug.
-
- In the case of concomitant treatment with quinolone antibiotics, these should be administered at least 4 hours before or after taking the drug because of the risk of reduced absorption.
-
- The effectiveness of vitamin D can be reduced if glucocorticoids (agents for suppressing the immune system and for certain inflammations) are taken at the same time.
-
- If treatment with bisphosphonate or sodium fluoride preparations (agents against osteoporosis) and the drug are taken at the same time, these should be taken at least 2 hours before the drug because of the risk of reduced absorption.
-
- Please note that this information may also apply to recently used medicines.
